"I have known Chris for a long time. He has shared some innovative investment concepts with me for quite a while. A couple of years ago I finally invested in one of his ideas and it was eye opening. This real asset investment has provided good returns and also has provided favorable tax treatment. This was quite different than my monthly "auto-pilot" S&P 500 investment. Now I am entering retirement and realize the importance of tax advantaged investing. I'm grateful for the advice and friendship over the years. I'm confident in Chris's ability to provide actionable advice for all."

"I've known Chris for about 5 years now during which time I've seen the progress he writes about in his blogs. They mirror his progression accurately which I appreciate. No fluff, just the real stuff. It is that honesty that has got me to the point of finally being serious about dipping my toes into the alternative investing waters. Chris' passion with respect to alternative investing is demonstrated by the amount of work he has out into his journey. Books read, seminars attended, and hard learned lessons are his CV. He's a true believer you can do better than traditional investing methods and is a legitimate source for those wanting the same."

About Me

Chris Odegard is The Prolific Investor. Chris is an average guy who had a white-collar job in the corporate world and followed the only thing he knew for decades, conventional wisdom and conventional investments. This worked relatively well until 2009, when he experienced an illiquidity event where he lost 55% of his assets and thousands of dollars per month in cash flow. Then, Chris read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad, and his mind was opened to a different type of investing, investing in real assets and private deals mostly insulated from the volatility, risk, and taxation of the stock market. In just nine years, Chris recouped the 55% he had lost and multiplied it many times over and now shares his experience and knowledge with you through his book Get off Your A$$ and Manage Your Money: Why You Need Alternative Investments and his alternative investment blog at TheProlificInvestor.net.

Prolific Investing

I want you to challenge conventional wisdom when it comes to money, personal finance, and investing. What’s the conventional wisdom, you ask? The conventional wisdom is to become debt-free and invest in a balanced portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) via a 401K or IRA. And what’s wrong with that, you ask? Simple, it isn’t working! According to a study conducted by GoBankingRates.com in 2020: ·34% of Americans have $0 in savings, 69% of Americans have less than $10K in saving, 46% of Americans have $0 in retirement savings, 65% of Americans have less than $10K in retirement savings, 49% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and 36% of Americans believe they are ready for retirement. Not a very bright picture. If conventional wisdom were working, we wouldn’t have statistics like these. Just about everything most people think about money, personal finance, and investing is simply wrong. At The Prolific Investor, through the alternative investment blogs, I’ll blow up the conventional wisdom with real-life examples done by real people.

Alternative Investments

The Prolific Investor is all about alternative investments. So, what are alternative investments or alternatives anyway? Alternatives are everything except publicly traded securities, like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds ETFs. What’s left, you ask?

A very long list, including but not limited to:

    • Notes
    • Real estate
    • Precious metals
    • Cryptocurrency
    • Business equipment
    • Private lending
    • Energy
    • Cash value life insurance
    • Patents
    • Copyrights
    • Small businesses

To fully understand this requires a bit more explanation. Assets or investments are divided into four categories: real assets, commodities, businesses, and paper.

    • Real Assets include real estate and business equipment.
    • Commodities include precious metals, oil, natural grass, grains, and beef.
    • Businesses include owning private shares of small companies.
    • Paper Assets include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, cash value life insurance, patents, and copyrights.

    • Businesses include owning private shares of small companies.

Everything other than stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs (shown in the box above) are alternative investments.

So when your broker (someone who might be broker than you) is advising you on your diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs; hopefully, you can now see that your portfolio isn’t diversified at all; you own no real assets, commodities, or businesses. When you think about it, it’s shocking that a financial planner or adviser would charge you to build a “so-called” diversified portfolio consisting of only paper assets. You’re only invested in 25% of the investable asset base, at best.

One characteristic of some paper assets is that their value can go to zero! All you own is paper, and some of your assets might go to zero, like in a bankruptcy. Real assets are tangible, things you can touch, and they don’t typically go to zero. Have you ever heard of an apartment building or a dump truck suddenly becoming worthless? If these assets were destroyed by fire, their value might initially go to zero (except for the land under the building), but smart investors would have insured them against loss, and they would be replaced. Have you ever called your insurance agent to obtain a policy to protect your nondiversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs against loss? He won’t do it. For some reason, your paper assets are not uninsurable!

Alternative investments have many advantages over conventional investments; you’ve just seen two, diversification and insurability, and there are many more. If alternatives are so great, why isn’t everyone investing in them? I answer that question and many more in my book, Get off Your A$$ and Manage Your Money: Why You Need Alternative Investments. I compare conventional and alternative investments across thirteen categories using real facts and figures from one of my alternative investments. You’ll be shocked at what you learn and wonder why you’ve limited yourself to paper assets for so long. Get off You’re A$$ and Manage Your Money is not some hoity-toity, highfalutin book only understandable by MBAs, PHDs, and BFDs; pick a suffix. It is for ordinary people who want to get ahead and build a more prosperous future for themselves and their families, have an open mind, and are willing to learn. If that sounds like you, this book is for you!
